Frequently Asked Questions ...

What is a subdomain and virtual host?

In DNS hierarchy, a subdomain is a domain that is part of a larger domain name. DNS hierarchy consists of the root-level domain at the top, underneath, which are the top-level domains, followed by second-level domains and finally subdomains. For example, in the domain name name.domain.com, 'name' is a subdomain of the larger second-level domain 'domain.com'.

A virtual host is the name of a virtual directory, which is created for you to upload your website to. The name of the directory can be your domain name (yourdomain.com or www.yourdomain.com) or a subdomain address - e.g. name.domain.com.

On the Internet, when you type the virtual host name (directory name) into the browser's Address bar you will be able to see the index of your web directory or the starting page of your web site (usually index.html, index.htm, default.html, default.htm, etc.).
